Lanny McDonald named to order of Hockey in Canada

By Medicine Hat News on March 10, 2022.

Medicine Hat Tigers legend Lanny McDonald is receiving one of Hockey Canada’s highest honours.

The 69-year-old was named to the Order of Hockey in Canada as a distinguished honouree for 2022 Wednesday morning.

McDonald, alongside Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur and three-time gold medalist Kim St-Pierre, will be recognized this June for their outstanding contributions to the sport at the annual Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf in Niagara Falls, Ont.

A four-time NHL all-star, McDonald co-captained the Calgary Flames to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 1989. Over his 16-year NHL career with the Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Rockies, McDonald won the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and recorded 1,006 points in 1,111 games.

His No. 9 was retired by the Flames in 1990 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

McDonald donned the red and white Maple Leaf twice. As an executive, McDonald represented Team Canada as general manager and director of player personnel, winning a gold medal as director of player personnel at the 2004 IIHF World Championship.

The Hanna product played 136 games in the orange and black between 1971 and 1973 and contributed 112 goals and 141 assists for 253 points. He added 37 points during Medicine Hat’s 1973 playoff run-in which the Tigers captured the WHL Championship. His No. 8 is hanging in the Co-op Place rafters.

Hockey Canada introduced the Order of Hockey in Canada on April 2, 2012, with the first group of five distinguished honourees – Jean Béliveau, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Gord Renwick.

Hockey Canada states candidates for election as distinguished honourees of the Order of Hockey in Canada are chosen “on the basis of their outstanding contributions or service to the growth and development of the sport of hockey in Canada, which may include players, coaches, officials, administrators, executives, trainers, physicians, inventors or any other person whose role or service in the game is recognized as extraordinary.”
