Rotary and Exhibition award ag scholarships

The 4th annual agriculture scholarship awards presented by Lethbridge and District Exhibition and the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East, awarded three young Albertans $10,000 on Thursday.
During a formal awards ceremony and dinner at the Heritage Hall Thursday, Adam Fast, Kelsey Gubbins and Darrick Nicols received their awards to continue their pursuit of an agricultural career.
Fast graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 2021 with a bachelors in agricultural studies and attended Lethbridge College for his technical studies semester in 2019 where he attained honours.
He is now a first year MSc student in Plant Science (Agronomy) at the University of Alberta where he achieved a GPA of 3.90. His thesis research focuses on using enhanced efficiency fertilizers to optimize spring wheat production.
Fast grew up in Lethbridge and has worked in the agronomy program at the Lethbridge research and development centre for five summers while in university and after graduate school Fast hopes to pursue an agronomic research career.
Gubbins is a fourth year student at the University of Lethbridge, working towards a bachelor of management minoring in accounting and agricultural enterprise management.
Gubbins grew up on a mixed farming operation in Rainier, Alta. and has been actively involved within her community through clubs and volunteering experiences, where she developed her love for agriculture and community involvement.
She plans to pursue a career in promoting agribusiness sustainability and is interested in becoming an Environmental Farm Plan Advisor.
Nicol is currently enrolled at Lakeland College completing his second year of the Agriculture Science Technology program majoring in dairy.
In 2020, Nicol graduated from Lethbridge College with a diploma in agriculture sciences, where he received the Governor General’s Academic Medal.
He was raised on a dairy farm near Coalhurst where he learned the value of hard work and community.
While at Lethbridge College Nicol volunteered with the Classroom Agriculture program, participated in agENT and is a Certified Crop Advisor candidate.
