As labour strife grows at post-secondary schools in Alberta, lengthy negotiations between Medicine Hat College and its 260 instructors are continuing.

Instructors at the University of Lethbridge are on strike, while Concordia University in Edmonton also saw job action before a new contract was settled there last month.

In Medicine Hat, college administration and the Medicine Hat College Faculty Association have been negotiating to renew a collective bargaining agreement which expired in late June 2020.

Association president Michelle Smith told the News new bargaining dates have been set, while a labour board charge filed by the association last spring will move to a hearing stage before the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

That will determine the merit of a charge the college bargained in bad faith, alleging they sought to undermine its authority to represent members.

No determination has been made, and MHC administration has not commented on the issue.
