A 34-year-old Lethbridge woman accused of striking and killing a pedestrian with her vehicle during the summer has pleaded not guilty to charges of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing death with a blood alcohol level over .08 per cent, and dangerous driving causing death.
Shannon Good Striker had hoped to resolve the charges without a trial, and earlier this month her lawyer told court he had received an agreed statement of facts from the Crown, but needed time to review the document with his client.
However, during a hearing Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court, an agent for Lethbridge lawyer Marcus Mueller pleaded not guilty on the accused’s behalf, and told the judge Good Striker has chosen to be tried by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury, and have a preliminary hearing.
The charges stem from a collision shortly after 10 a.m. Aug. 11 on Mayor Magrath Drive and 12 Avenue South. Police said a southbound truck struck a 54-year-old woman, who was rushed to the Chinook Regional Hospital, but later died.
Good Striker’s matters have been adjourned to Friday at the Case Management Office at the courthouse, to schedule a date for the preliminary hearing. A preliminary hearing is typically held to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant a trial.
