Saskatchewan set an all-time high for power use during a frigid end to 2021, that province’s Crown power provider announced.

The record demand from customers was reset on Dec. 29 and then again on Dec. 30 at 3,910 megawatts. That is a increase of 42 megawatts over the previous record, a difference equal to the average consumption of 42,000 homes.

Kory Hayko, a vice-president with SaskPower said it was no surprise demand rose during the cold temperatures, but “breaking all-time peak demand records is uncommon, but to do it two times in as many days is quite rare (but it is) an occurrence we were prepared for.”

Demand was also high to start the month in Alberta, where an all-time demand record of 11,939 megawatts was recorded on Jan. 3. That is 210 megawatts above the previous high mark set during a February 2020 cold snap.
