It was a big weekend for both the men’s and women’s Rattlers basketball teams. Medicine Hat College’s women’s team beat the Ambrose Lions in both of their matchups over the weekend, winning 83-59 Friday night and taking a close Saturday contest 69-56. Jasmine Gardiner led the Rattlers offence in Friday’s win with 20 points and five 3-pointers. Katelyn Rozdeba was not far behind with 18 points and dominated the glass with 15 rebounds for a double-double. Led by Rozdeba, the Rattlers out-rebounded the Lions 49-29 and had better ball control as they scored 22 points off turnovers and gave the ball away six fewer times than Ambrose’s 22. Saturday’s win was a little closer as they only won by a 13-point margin as opposed to Friday’s 24-point win. Again Rozdeba was a key contributor with 26 points, 15 rebounds and five steals. She also was perfect behind the line making both of her 3-point attempts. The Rattlers again dominated the Lions in the rebound category picking up 51 to Ambrose’s 38 boards. Medicine Hat had 21 turnovers in the game, one more than Ambrose but made up for it by creating 21 points off Lions turnovers. The women’s team sits at 4-4 on the season after the big weekend and is riding a three-game win streak. They will host SAIT Friday at the Big Marble Go Centre at 8 p.m. The Rattlers men’s basketball team took the confidence gained in their 86-71 win over Ambrose Friday and beat the Lions 84-63 Saturday. Just as he did in Friday’s win, Kieron Burgess led the Rattlers to victory on Saturday with 16 points and 20 rebounds. Jordan Biggar was right behind Burgess with 14 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Just like the women’s team, the men out rebounded the Lions 62-40 in the win. After the two weekend wins, the men’s basketball team has a record of 2-6, coming out of the Christmas break hot from a slow season start. They’re also back in action Friday against SAIT, with that match getting under way at 6 p.m. at BMGC. Womens volleyball It was a tough weekend for the Rattlers women’s volleyball team as they dropped two matches against Ambrose. Friday night in Ambrose they fell in three straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-20) and lost in four sets (25-21, 18-25, 25-7, 25-21) on Saturday in Medicine Hat. In Saturday’s loss, Kennedy Galloway led the way for the Rattlers with eight kills while Olivia Jacobson set up 16. Galloway also led the defence with 12 digs. The Rattlers women’s volleyball team’s next action is Friday at SAIT before they return to Medicine Hat Saturday for a 8 p.m. match at BMGC. The men’s Rattlers volleyball team was not in action this weekend due to both their matches against Ambrose being postponed due to COVID.
