Medicine Hat ringette was well represented at the Ed Horvath tournament this weekend.

The U14 Impact and U16 Goal Diggers brought home the gold as both teams won their final game by a score of 6-2.

The Impact finished their tournament undefeated with a 4-0 round-robin record, and capped off their weekend by beating the Bow Valley Renegades for the gold. Impact head coach Donnel Provost said he was very excited for his team to win, especially in front of their families.

“Very big win,” Provost said. “A lot of these kids have family and extended family here to watch them, so they’re very happy to have them all here and to win in front of their parents and family.”

Impact centre Ryleigh Jackiw said it was an honour to win with her team in front of their families, and she said her team put a lot of work in for the tournament.

“A lot of hard work and preparation and just a lot of fun,” Jackiw said.

Jackiw opened the scoring for the Impact as they finished the first half with a 3-1 lead.

Centre Jordy Provost scored two goals in the first and two in the second to help lead the way for the Impact’s gold win. She said it’s really cool to share this with the ringette community and be back on the ice.

“It kind of feels like an accomplishment, feel really proud,” Provost said.

The U16 Goal Diggers watched as the Impact won their gold medal game and followed it up by routing the South Calgary Wild 6-2 to win gold themselves.

Goal Diggers head coach Kendra Stern said her team did an excellent job throughout the weekend. She said she’s enjoyed being back at the rink with the girls.

“It’s been so much fun getting back to ringette and getting to play our whole season,” Stern said. “Our girls love being on the ice.”

The Goal Diggers also went undefeated in the round robin, including a 5-3 win Saturday against their finals opponent. Stern said it feels empowering for her team to win their local tournament.

“Our girls have worked so hard all year long and they deserve it,” Stern said. “They’re a great team.”

Kyree Stern-Rebman was between the pipes for the Goal Diggers in the final and said it feels nice to play with her team again after not playing last year due to COVID shutdowns.

“The team brings joy to everyone and they are just a great group of girls to play with,” Stern-Rebman said.

The U19B Mavens were the only other Medicine Hat team to medal, as they finished third in their division after beating the BV Edge 10-4 Saturday afternoon.

The U19A Gators finished their tournament with one win, two losses and a tie in their first game.

At the U12 level, the Surge finished their weekend with a 1-3 record after their 6-4 win on Sunday against the BV Killer Bees.

Editors note: An earlier version of the story’s headline stated that the Impact and Gators won gold. It has been corrected to reflect the Impact and Goal Diggers winning gold.
