Tigers drop fourth straight

By Medicine Hat News on November 6, 2021.

The Medicine Hat Tigers had their losing streak extended to four games in a 3-2 loss to the Swift Current Broncos on Friday at the Innovation Credit Union i-plex.

The Tigers and Broncos traded chances in the first period with neither mounting any offense despite early power plays.

Swift Current got on the board first with Josh Filmon’s fourth goal of the season in the dying minutes of the frame.

Medicine Hat answered back quickly on an unassisted goal from veteran Corson Hopwo, his fifth of the year, just over a minute later.

The stalemate continued through the second period thanks largely in part to a 10-save effort from Broncos goaltender Isaac Poulter. The Broncos managed just two shots in the frame, but carried the 1-1 deadlock into the third.

Swift Current finally ended the scoring drought 55 seconds into the final frame on a power play tally from Matthew Ward, his fifth goal of the season.

Broncos forward Caleb Wyrostok – a Hat product – added some padding with an empty-netter in the final two minutes of regulation.

The insurance proved crucial, as Tabby centre Owen MacNeil scored with 44 seconds left to bring the game back within one, but the Tigers were unable to complete the comeback.

Garin Bjorklund, in his eighth start of the season, stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced,

The Tigers came up empty on three power play opportunities in the game, while Swift Current converted on one of their six chances.

The loss puts Medicine Hat at 4-6-1-1 on the season. Swift Current improved to 3-7-2-1, with all three of their victories coming against Medicine Hat.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday night when the host the Moose Jaw Warriors at Co-op Place. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
