Who’s running for councils around southeast Alberta?

Voters across Alberta go to the polls Oct. 18 to elect local government leaders. A look at some municipal election races in the greater southeast Alberta region:

Bow Island

Incumbent Bows Island Mayor Gordon Reynolds and six council candidates have been acclaimed to the the town’s next town council.

Acclaimed councillors are Dave Harrison, Roberto Ficiur, Shannon Strom, Denise Curliss, Terrie Matz and Kim Mitchell.

Bow Island voters will still be able to cast ballots in provincial referenda and a local question about support for potential rerouting of Highway 3 several kilometres south of the town.

Forty Mile

Five council positions have been acclaimed in the County of Forty Mile.

There will be an election in Division No. 6 (Burdett) between incumbent councillor Chantel Timmons and Don Drake. The county is seeking candidates for Division No. 7 (Bow Island area), a position currently held by Reeve Steve Wikkerink.

Acclaimed are incumbents Joan Hughson (Div. 1 – Aden), Diane Harty (Div. 2 – Etzikom/Manyberries), Stacey Barrows (Div. 3 – Skiff), Craig Widmer (Div.4 – Orion/Conquerville) and new councillor Al Kuizinga (Div. 5 – 40 Mile Park).

Village of Foremost

Six candidates will vie for five council seats on Oct. 18: Lorne Buis, Bruce Hillis, Blake Klatt, Josh Kultgen, Paul Leighton, Tyson Ormann, Stewart Payne and Larry Robinson. The mayor of the village is elected from council by councillors.

M.D. of Acadia

Six candidates are seeking five council seats in the Municipal District of Acadia.

They are Scott Heeg, Ron Hoyt, Lesley Neilson, Tim Peers, Peter Rafa and Aaron Skappak. The reeve is elected by council members.

Town of Oyen

Incumbent Doug Jones has been acclaimed as the mayor of Oyen along with six council members following nominations last week. Councillors for the next four-year term are: Jack Hauck, Blake Hertz, Trevor Hittel, Ed Hogan, Robert Kacso and James Walker.
