Motz secures 30,142 votes

The margin of victory for Conservative incumbent Glen Motz grew slightly overnight as all polling stations and advanced polls reported in the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

Motz secured 30,142 votes in the 44th General Election on Monday and was returned to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament. That total represents about 65.3 per cent of votes cast, with special mail-in ballots likely to be added.

In total 46,215 votes were cast in the federal constituency that stretches from the Saskatchewan boundary to Cardston, equating to a 58.2 per cent turnout.

New Democrat Jocelyn Stenger placed second with 6,506 votes (14.1 per cent). People’s party candidate Brodie Heidinger was third (4,329 votes, 9.4 per cent), followed by Liberal Hannah Wilson (3,292, 7.1 per cent) in fourth, the Maverick Party’s Geoff Shoesmith (1,169, 2.5 per cent) in fifth, and Green Party campaigner Diandra Bruised Head (683, 1.5 per cent) in sixth.

Regional results

Martin Shields was re-elected as the Conservative Party MP for Bow River riding in Southern Alberta, while his People’s Party opponent finished second.

Shields, the former mayor of Brooks in the riding, earned 34,276 votes with all but one of 224 polling stations reporting.

That equals 69.5 per cent of the vote, while PPC challenger Jonathon Bridges earned 10.2 per cent, ahead of New Democrat Michael MacLean (9.2 per cent).

Liberal Getu Shawile placed fourth (7.7 per cent), followed by Maverick Party candidate Orrin Bliss (2.6 per cent) and Tom Lipp (0.8 per cent) of the Christian Heritage Party. Turnout in the riding was 61 per cent.

Damien Kurek was returned as the Conservative Member of Parliament from Battle River-Crowfoot riding in eastern Alberta. Voters in the riding that includes the Special Areas voted 71.4 per cent in favour of the Conservatives.

A tight race for second-place saw New Democrat challenger Tonya Ratusniak earn 222 more votes than Dennis Trepanier of the third-place People’s Party.

The Maverick Party’s Jeff Golka was fourth, just ahead of Liberal Leah Diane McLeod, and Veterans Coalitions Party member John Irwin.

Voters in Southwest Saskatchewan re-elected Conservative Jeremy Patzer to a second term as MP for Cypress Hills-Grassland on Monday, giving Patzer 72 per cent support.

NDP candidate Alex McPhee placed second, well back with 10.2 per cent of the vote. People’s Party candidate Charles Reginald Hislop was third, with Liberal Mackenzie Hird in fourth, Maverick candidate Mark Skagen in fifth, and independent candidate Maria Rose Lewans in sixth.
