Man fined after resisting arrest

A southern Alberta man got off with only fines after he fled from police several months ago.
Kayle Hood-Betts was fined $1,390 after he pleaded guilty Monday in Lethbridge provincial court to charges of resisting arrest and careless driving.
On April 7 police received a report of suspicious activity at Botterill Bottom Park down by the Oldman River, where two vehicles were parked beside each other near the boat launch and the occupants were seen exchanging something.
Police arrived shortly afterward and spoke to the occupants, who claimed they were friends and simply trying to work out a disagreement. They assured the officer there were no drugs involved.
However, the officer saw on the dashboard of Hood-Betts’ vehicle, a small glass vile containing a brownish substance, which the occupants admitted was marijuana. The officer pointed out it was illegal to have marijuana within reach of the occupants of a vehicle, and he asked to see their identification.
Hood-Betts said he didn’t have his licence with him, and after the officer ran the licence plate on the vehicle, he discovered Hood-Betts was wanted on an outstanding warrant. When the officer attempted to arrest Hood-Betts he refused to get out of the vehicle and sped away, slowing only long enough to let his passenger out before taking off and leaving the park.
The officer did not pursue Hood-Betts, but he was arrested later.
“I do regret that day,” Hood-Betts told the judge.
He said he turned himself over to police and apologized, and is trying to make changes and move forward with his life.
“I was going through some mental health issues,” he said.
