Brian Dueck hopes to help Medicine Hat regain financial stability if given the chance to be a city councillor.

Dueck has been in Medicine Hat for 16 years and all four of his children were born here. He has worked as a facility manager for the British Army and is also a journeyman electrician. He is currently a full-time student at NAIT taking his bachelor of business administration.

“I found that my career couldn’t progress further unless I got credentials to go with my experience,” said Dueck. “Whether I start a business myself or get back into corporate management, this will aid me in achieving those things.”

Dueck’s platform is based on two important ideas.

“The first one is the financial stability of the city,” said Dueck. “This has to be the No. 1 priority for the city … we’ve doubled our debt in the last five years. We’re in a position where if we don’t take responsibility now, then in 10 years we’re going to have nothing, we’re going to have to give up all our services. If we take care of it now, we can limit that. We can be responsible about it and have a really bright future, but we really need to decide now.”

Another aspect Dueck wants to focus on is transparency and communication from within city hall.

If elected, Dueck promises to repeal a specific bylaw.

“It’s one for school buses where it prohibits them from using the stop sign and alternating flashing lights,” said Dueck. “All the research suggests it’s actually one of the most important safety features.”

Dueck says he has always loved the city of Medicine Hat.

“My slogan for everything has been ‘Love Your City’ and I really believe that,” said Dueck. “Medicine Hat has been an absolutely fantastic place and I want it to be a fantastic place 10 years, 20 years from now.”
