Clugston to launch re-election campaign virtually Tuesday

Ted Clugston will launch his re-election campaign in a virtual kick-off tonight after cancelling plans to host supporters at a restaurant and pub in south Medicine Hat.

A release from the campaign states the change is being made “out of an abundance of caution” and the candidate hopes to reach “some (people) who wouldn’t normally get involved with such political events,” said Clugston.

The incumbent candidate announced his intention to seek a third term during January’s state of the city address, and registered his campaign earlier this month.

Four other candidates are challenging Clugston, who was first elected mayor in 2013 following a term as alderman. They are (in reverse alphabetical order) Michael Starner (Facebook: MikeStar4Mayor), Tony Leahy (Facebook: leahyformayor), Alan Rose (www.alanrose.com) and Linnsie Clark (www.clarkformayor.ca).

Regional races

One week ahead of a nomination deadline, four contenders have announced campaigns to become the mayor of Redcliff.

They are current mayor Dwight Kilpatrick, former mayor Ernie Reimer, current town councillor Shawna Gale and Mark Payne.

There are currently six campaigns for seats on the six-seat council, including four incumbents, Cathy Crozier, Chris Czember, Larry Liepert, Jim Steinke, along with challengers William Ranger and Matthew St. Pierre. Candidates will officially be nominated on Sept. 20 ahead of the Oct. 18 vote.

Referenda

A former Medicine Hat alderman has formed a third-party advertising entity to argue against equalization in the planned referendum.

Cathy Smith is listed as the chief financial officer of “Vote Yes to End Equalization, Inc.” which has the corporate address of a Medicine Hat area law firm.

Albertans will vote on two referendum questions proposed by the province when those who live off of First Nations reserves elect local leaders on Oct. 18 – support for equalization and ending daylight saving time.

Albertans will also be asked to chose from a list of candidates those who the province would recommend be appointed to the Senate of Canada.
