Hat High senior boys volleyball team embracing new league

With a senior boys volleyball team full of experience, this season will be a new test for Hat High.

Nine of the Hawks 12 players are in Grade 12 and have played for head coach Jordan Weimer for the past two years. This combined experience is what Weimer believes will be the team’s strength heading into the season.

“Playing in a new league, this is a whole new challenge for them but I think they’r up for it,” he said.

The Hawks will now be playing teams from the Lethbridge area instead of local squads. This move comes as the Hawks are the only local AAA-tier team, but it also allows them to be better prepared for zone playoffs at the end of the season.

“For the recent history of our program, we’ve played teams we don’t see in that zone tournament. We played local teams, which I mean has been great competition, but when we go to zones, we end up losing because we haven’t seen any team of that calibre all year,” Weimer said.

“Now we’re going to get to see those top-tier teams all season long and then we will see them again when we host zones in November.”

Even with the experienced roster, Weimer has set conservative expectations for himself and the team as they enter the new league.

“I think that it will be a learning year,” he said. “Even though we have a lot of experience I don’t want to go in with the mindset that we will take this league over. I think that we need to learn, play at a new pace and once we get there I think we are going to be in a good position to succeed.”

The Hawks play their first game Wednesday against Chinook High School.
