WHL announces Western Conference schedule changes

By Medicine Hat News on September 9, 2021.

The Western Hockey League will be keeping its American teams separate from their Canadian teams to start the season.

The league announced Wednesday that due to the on-going border restrictions between Canada and the U.S., the U.S. Division will begin the season competing exclusively against their U.S. Division opponents. The same separation will be in effect for the B.C. division who will only play within their own division to start.

As a result, the five teams within the U.S. division are: the Everett Silvertips, Tri-City Americans, Spokane Chiefs, Seattle Thunderbirds and Portland Winterhawks. The B.C. division will contain: the Victoria Royals, Vancouver Giants, Prince George Cougars, Kelowna Rockets and Kamloops Blazers.

The WHL has said the divisional split will only take place for the month of October, with the schedule returning to normal come November.

It was also previously announced that the Western Conference Clubs would compete exclusively within their conference only during the 2021-22 regular season.

The Western Hockey League says they will continue to work with government and public health authorities in each of the six provincial and state jurisdictions located in WHL territory to ensure the health and safety of WHL players, staff, and officials, as well as the communities in which the WHL operates.
