Christian Heritage Party candidate Geoffrey Capp says if elected by the citizens of Lethbridge he will speak up against government waste, interference in people’s lives, and against the government attacking the autonomy of the family and fundamental freedoms.
“We want everybody to have their rights protected, and we want equality,” he says. “The role of the government is to protect its citizens’ rights and freedoms. Not to keep them safe, but protect their rights and freedoms.”
Capp elaborates on this further. He states his party feels freedom of belief trumps all other considerations, including when it comes to public health measures introduced in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Citizens should have the autonomy to make their own determinations about health,” Capp says. “Definitely those who are ill should be isolated, and the healthy should be allowed to pass freely and continue to operate their businesses, continue to serve their customers.
“The second thing we need is courage, and we need the truth,” he says. “We need to have the freedom to question measures that are taken.”
Capp defends controversial church leaders Pastor James Coates and Pastor Artur Pawlowski, who have both been vocal opponents of public health measures related to COVID-19.
“We deserve to see the evidence for these measures that infringe on freedoms guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” Capp says. “Pastor Coates’ people have evidence on their side. The government has chosen not to counter it, but have insisted on measures. And Pastor Pawlowski in Calgary; he is not in violation of any law. They just made them mad so they want to put him in jail for 21 days just because he made them mad.”
Capp says his party also does not accept the accuracy of current COVID (PCR) tests, but they do believe COVID is real and accept what the science of pandemics says about the dangers of highly contagious diseases spreading through concentrated populations. While the Christian Heritage Party believes the seriousness of COVID is overstated, Capp says his party does accept the minimal necessity of isolating those who are truly sick and showing symptoms of COVID-19.
“It can kill, but you have a 99.5 per cent chance of surviving it. And it is the elderly who are the most susceptible. And that is true of almost any coronavirus illness.”
Outside of its pandemic positions, the Christian Heritage Party believes in fiscal responsibility, and would like to see greater efforts made at the federal level to balance the budget and the eventual paying down of the national debt which, he admits, will “take a long time.”
“We need to get our country’s finances under order,” he states, “First of all we need sunset laws to automatically bring an end to agencies, boards, commissions and (public) corporations that have been created in the past and just keep going and going because barely anyone notices they are there. Unless it has been extended by a deliberate legislative act. Two, we need to have zero-based budgeting in federal departments on a rotating basis. Every year a few departments would have to build their budgets from scratch instead of just reusing the same one and bump the numbers up where they feel like it.”
Capp’s party would also work toward the reformation of the justice system if elected.
“We need to get the justice system re-arranged,” he states. “We have people who go to jail. They languish there, and then they come out and they are a problem again. We need to gear our penitentiaries to rehabilitate these people so when they come out they are going to live according to the law and we can get along with them better. We also need truth in sentencing; where if you are sentenced to ‘X’ number of years in jail and you spend that time. And it counts as long as you are participating in rehabilitation.”
The Christian Heritage Party however, he says, would focus on putting mainly violent criminals into jail.
“(Stephen) Harper liked to talk about ‘tough on crime,'” he says by way of example, “but it was really dumb the way he went about it. Why do you throw a thief in jail? The thing is you mandate the thief pay restitution to his victims. That relieves the victims’ suffering and it rehabilitates the thief because you no longer get something for nothing. It’s costing him now. It is violent criminals that should be in prison.”
If elected in Lethbridge, Capp, (who has run eight times federally in the past, four times in Lethbridge), says he will be a strong representative of all citizens in Ottawa.
“I want to go to Ottawa and represent the common person,” he says. “I want to be here in a constituency office and listen even if I don’t agree with what you have to say. I want to hear what you have your say, and I want to have a record of it. I want to be there (in Ottawa) to say ‘No’ to stupidity in government.”
And while his party would expect tolerance for all peoples and religions, Capp says his party would move to limit immigration for Muslim countries which follow Sharia Law.
“We do believe we should have a moratorium on immigration from countries with Sharia Law,” he states. “We don’t want the character of Canada to change so we no longer have religious freedom, equality of law for women, or basic rights and respect for homosexuals and bisexuals, and such.
“We want everybody to have their rights protected, and we want equality.”
