1949 ~ EDWARD STRAUB ~ 2021 Edward Fred Straub of Medicine Hat passed away on Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 at the age of 72 years. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at his home, 640 Pottery Street, Medicine Hat, AB on August 28, 2021 starting at 2:00 pm continuing until late evening.1950 ~ LORNE RIEGER ~ 2021 Lorne Frederick Rieger of Medicine Hat passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021 at the age of 71 years, beloved husband of the late Shirley Rieger. He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Jeffrey (Catherine), Jeremy (Stacy), Joy (Stacy), and Jennifer (Allen); eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Horace (Karen); his sister, Judy (Ed) Aberle; his mother-in-law Cora Reider; one brother-in-law, Dennis (Nary) Reider; one sister-in-law, Mary (Alan) Richards as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lenora and Adam Rieger; his step mother Lydia Rieger; his wife, Shirley Rieger on December 23, 2019; and his sister, Elaine Rieger. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. 1983 ~ JAMES SCHMIDT ~ 2021 James Nolan Schmidt of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, August 21st, 2021 at the age of 37 years. James leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Jim and Kim Schmidt; sisters, Tara Critchlow (Doug) and her children, Cole and Taylor, Alicia Schmidt (Chris), Brittany Schmidt (Jason); brothers, Travis Unger and his children Brandon and Devon, and Ryan Unger (Kerri) and their son, Finlay; grandparents, Betty Oerlemans (Melvin) and David Prawdzik; special cousin, Wally Prawdzik; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. James’ hobbies included cooking and spending time with his cats, Lucee, Cindee, Wendee, Smokee, and Babee; that he adored. His sense of humour was infectious and his imagination, bountiful, filled with dreams and new ideas. He cherished the time he spent with his family and could light up a room with his smile! If you were lucky enough to know him – James was a truly delightful, generous, easy-going, fun-loving human being and he will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved him. BONNIE DYCK 1948 ~ 2020 Bonnie Faye Dyck (nee Johnson) passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat with family by her side on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at the age of 72 years. She is survived by her husband, Cal Dyck; sons, Shaun (Jen), Shane (Lina), Casey (Cassie); daughter, Chantelle Fickinger (Simon) as well as step-daughters, Jacquie Mirtle and Carla Kolody (Shaun). Bonnie is also survived by her sister, Brenda Hamilton (Jack); brothers, Don and Dave as well as nine grandchildren. HELEN ALICE FLAIG July 21, 1931 ~ August 16, 2021 On August 16, 2021, Helen Flaig was called to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ at the age of 90 years. She was born in Maple Creek, SK., the eldest daughter of Fred and Hellen Grage on July 21, 1931. Raised on her father’s Homestead, along Belinger Creek in Cypress Hills, she acquired a love for horses and cats. After graduating from Moose Jaw Normal School, she taught in one room school houses in Southwest Saskatchewan. On December 28, 1953, she married Phillip Flaig of Irvine, Alberta. In the spring of 1960, they relocated from the Cypress Hills area to Nemiskam Community Pasture at Manyberries, AB. This would be her home town for most of the next 55 years. In 2015, she moved to Chinook Village in Medicine Hat. Here, she volunteered much of her time helping others at South Ridge Village. She had a strong faith in God that never wavered. Her children were taught to be curious and never stop learning. Food was to be shared with whomever sat at her table and there was always a can of pork and beans in the cupboard, just in case someone stopped by unexpectedly. Besides cooking for her guests, she enjoyed Jigsaw puzzles, reading endless books, knitting and crocheting countless afghans. Her hands were busy with yarn to her final days. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Phillip in 2009 as well as one infant grandson at birth. She leaves to cherish her memory: two children, Dale (Gerald) Mack and Larry (Ann) Flaig; two grandsons, Rory (Marlene) Mack and Kirk (Heidi) Mack as well as six great-grandchildren. Helen’s life will be honoured and her memory cherished without the proceedings of a formal service. Halo Air Ambulance was a cause she firmly believed saved lives. JEANNINE SCHMALTZ December 30, 1939 – August 22, 2021 Jeannine Schmaltz passed away peacefully on August 22nd, 2021, at the age of 81 years. Waiting to greet her were her beloved husband, Chris; her parents, Oscar and Eugenie Lemay; 3 sisters, Madeleine Lemay, Cecile Dumonceaux, Bernadette Yanchuk; and one brother Louis Lemay. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Mark (Barb) of Medicine Hat, Stuart (Jan) of North Battleford, Shane (Jody) of Sylvan Lake and Blaine Selinger of Regina; five grandchildren, Tanner & Tiana (Mark), Brooke and Madison (Shane) and Joshua (Blain); one sister, Madeleine (Tony) Brassard; two brothers, Lucien (Sally) Lemay and Alfred Lemay; and in-laws, too numerous to mention.
Marie Germain Jeannine Lemay was born on her family’s farm south of Ponteix, Saskatchewan, on December 30, 1939. She attended school in Ponteix and upon graduation from high school, enrolled at the Regina Grey Nun’s School of Nursing. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1961 and worked first at the Regina Grey Nuns hospital before moving to Prelate where she worked at the Prelate Union Hospital.
It is in Prelate that she met the love of her life and her and Chris were married on September 29th, 1962. Chris and Jeannine were blessed with three children, Mark, Stuart and Shane. Nothing was more important to her than her family and as a full-time working Mom, she sacrificed much to ensure they were loved and had everything they needed.
Jeannine had a long and industrious career working as a Public Health Nurse for the Government of Saskatchewan. Her office was in Leader and she travelled many miles hosting clinics, visiting schools and giving countless needles. She also trained and served as an EMT and was an attendant for the Leader Ambulance for 5 years. After over 35 years of nursing, Jeannine retired in 2003. She was always an active member of the community. She served on the Village of Prelate Council for 21 years, 9 of those as Mayor. She also served on several Boards including the Leader Union Hospital, the Western Senior Citizens Board, the Leader School Division, the Prelate Welcome Inn and the Prelate Cooperative grocery store.
Not only did Jeannine manage to balance family, career and volunteering, she also made time for her many hobbies. She loved crocheting, macrame, flower arranging, paper tole, gardening, and ceramics. Her artistic gifts could be found not only in her own home but also the homes of her children and friends and in the Church. Jeannine loved music and could play any instrument by ear.
Jeannine treasured her children and grandchildren and was an amazing Mother and Grandmother. She spoiled them rotten with her treat cupboard, baking, pickles, treasure hunts, gifts and most important, her time. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Monday August 30th, 2021, at 10:30 am. There will be a eulogy and slide presentation preceding the Mass at 10:10 am. A light lunch will be provided after Mass. Due to the high number of COVID 19 cases in Medicine Hat, the service and lunch is by invitation only. However, the service will be live streamed and can be viewed on you tube. Search You Tube – Medicine Hat Holy Family Church and then scroll down to the Funeral Mass for Jeannine Schmaltz. It will be available once the service starts.
Interment will be at the 3:30 pm at the Prelate Cemetery and is open to anyone wishing to attend.

JOSEPH KOBSAR 1940 ~ 2021 Joseph ‘Joe’ Kobsar went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 16, 2021, at the age of 81 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sherri and her children, Randalyn Fisher, Brent (Brandy) Siemens and Wayne (Marcy) Siemens; his son, Curtis Kobsar; granddaughters, Christine Gafencu (Nickolas) and Delaine Kobsar; grandson, Mitchell (Alexa) Kobsar and their mother, Marlys; brother, Arnold (Lee) as well as great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Mathies and Caroline Kobsar; several siblings as well as his first wife, Carol Ann. Joe was a millwright at Ipsco in Regina until he retired and moved to Medicine Hat. He has touched many lives and will be sadly missed. A Celebration of Joe’s life will be announced at a later date. MARIAN LESKIW October 30, 1926 ~ August 11, 2021 On Wednesday, August 11th, 2021, we said goodbye to our dear, sweet Marian. She brought joy to her family ever since she was born on October 30th, 1926, in a place called St Paul, Manitoba, a tiny little town just on the outskirts of Winnipeg. She was the baby of her family to her parents, Ernest and Mary (Sulkers) Calsbeck and her only sister, Grace along with five brothers, Henry, Herman, Fred, Neil and John. Marian was the last of her immediate family to fall asleep in death. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Leskiw in 1998 and stepson, Wade Wolfe in 2019.
Marian Calsbeck and Edward Leskiw were married on May 1st, 1977 and she then gained a ready made family of two teenagers including a son, Wade Wolfe and a daughter, Cindy (Harold) Bice; two grandsons, Chris (Candace) and Corey (Erin) Bice and three great-granddaughters. Marian remained in Winnipeg until 1996, when after some health issues with Dad, they decided to move to Medicine Hat to be closer to Cindy. This was the first time for Marian to live away from Winnipeg. After Ed died only two years later, she chose to stay in Medicine Hat and remain close with Wade and Cindy. This is where she resided up until the time of her passing.
Marian had a quiet and loving nature that drew many more to her over the years. These ones loved and cherished her calling her Mom, Auntie, Grandma and wonderful Friend. Some of these friendships have lasted for over 60 years! These special people were such a gift for Marian and we know she had a love for them all as she expressed it many times.
Marian leaves behind an extended family of many nieces and nephews and one last sister-in-law. This is a very spiritual family that has a rich history of serving Jehovah God. Marian's parents studied with Bible Students and became active Jehovah’s Witnesses. Marian took this beautiful Bible knowledge and along with her deep spiritual values, applied them to her life. She dedicated her life in water baptism at age 14 and served Jehovah faithfully for over 80 years. She shared in many wonderful blessings while being able to serve God Almighty. She loved the thought from the Bible that speaks of a time when there would be no more suffering or sickness and death would be swallowed up found at Revelation 21:4 and Isaiah 33:24. She really did love the Bible’s promise that one day she could run to greet her resurrected loved ones, just as we look forward to hugging her again very soon (John 5:28,29).

RACHEL THURLBECK 1942 ~ 2021 It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Rachel Donna Thurlbeck, beloved wife of Edward, announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend. She passed away peace-fully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, August 23, 2021, at the age of 78 years. Rachel was born on November 22, 1942, in Moncton, NB. She married Ed on June 2, 1967, in Toronto and shared 54 wonderful years together. Along with her loving husband, Ed, Rachel’s memory will be treasured in the hearts of her family; son, Patrick (Monica) Thurlbeck of Martensville, SK.; daughter, Sandra Winchester (John LePage) as well as her grandchildren, Matthew Thurlbeck and Joshua and Kaitlyn Winchester.
