A Liberal Party of Canada candidate has been named for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner in the coming federal election.
The News has learned that federal party organizers were in the city Thursday collecting signatures for the nomination papers for Hannah Wilson.
She was named on the party’s site as being acclaimed for the nomination on Aug. 18. Sources tell the News the Alberta native was most recently a worker in the office of Finance Minister Crystia Freeland, focused on Western Canadian issues.
She previously served as an aide to Calgary-area Liberal MP Kent Hehr, who has family in the Medicine Hat area, but lost in a 2019 reelection bid.
It is not immediately known what ties she has to the riding, but a bio provided by the Liberal Party describes her has having a family involved in farming. She graduated from Queen’s University in 2018.
A request made by the News to interview Wilson was still being processed on Thursday.
Candidates face an Aug. 30 deadline to submit paperwork to Elections Canada to be on the ballot for the Sept. 20 election.
The ballot is finalized on Sept. 1.
Announced candidates for the riding are incumbent Glen Motz (Conservative), Brodie Heidinger (People’s Party) and Geoff Shoesmith (Maverick Party). The New Democrats and the Green Party have not released any information about local candidates.
Grits fill roster in region
The Liberals also named a candidate in a nearby riding on Wednesday.
Leah McLeod will run for the party in Battle River-Crowfoot, which includes the Special Areas. That riding was represented by Damien Kurek, a Conservative who is seeking re-election.
The Liberal candidate in Bow River, comprising the regions around Brooks, Strathmore, and Taber will be Getahun Shawile, it was announced on July 17.
