Alberta Urban Municipalities Association president resigns

LETHBRIDGE HERALDtkalinowski@lethbridgeherald.com Brooks Mayor Barry Morishita has resigned, effective immediately, from his role as president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA).According to the AUMA, Morishita resigned last Friday. Reasons for his resignation were not given in the release to local media on Monday.
Morishita had clashed with the province over various issues during his term as president, and had been a particularly outspoken critic of the UCP’s Bill 29 which, according to Morishita, would allow “big money” into municipal elections by allowing third-party donors to be revealed by candidates after the elections, and by moving limits on donations from $4,000 to $5,000 per candidate.
“Our principle is that we don’t want big money to distort or have an unfair effect on election outcome,” Morishita is quoted as saying in 2020. “We believe that everyone should have the right to have a say in what’s going on, but it should be fair and equitable, and we don’t think that some of the third-party rules do that.”
The AUMA confirmed Angela Duncan as its interim president until a new president and board is elected at its convention in November. Follow @TimKalHerald on Twitter 4
