The federal Maverick Party officially has a candidate for the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner. Walsh’s Geoff Shoesmith has been named the local candidate by the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner Electoral District Association’s executive board of directors, according to a party release. “Geoff has been an integral part of the Walsh community for many years, raising his children there, all while creating a welcoming and familiar place to get gas, grab snacks and get a friendly, ‘Hey, how ya doin?'” Darlene Collings, local Maverick Party EDA president, says in the Monday release. “Geoff’s passion and dedication to finding a “better way” for western Canadians has already inspired the board of directors to throw their weight behind him as our choice as MP for this riding.” Born in Ottawa, Shoesmith moved to Medicine Hat with his parents in 1975. Shoesmith has spent time working in the oilfield, as well as owning and operating multiple businesses in southeastern Alberta, including a gas station in Walsh, which his family has been running for the past 26 years. He has also spent 19 years as a volunteer firefighter and helps drive the Zamboni at the Irvine Sports Complex when needed. Shoesmith will be officially introduced as the local candidate during tonight’s Maverick Party town hall meeting, slated for 6 p.m. at the Kin Coulee bandshell. Jay Hill, interim leader of the Maverick Party, will be on hand to introduce Shoesmith as the candidate. The Maverick Party was created in September 2020 and has grown to represent 36 ridings across the West with 27 nominated candidates, according to a party release. 8
