Medicine Hat News The Alberta government is providing $2 million for the province’s musicians through the Stabilize Live Music Grant program, which through two streams seeks to support the live music industry hit the ground running following setbacks of the pandemic. The Individual Micro-grant stream supports live music professionals with innovative content creation, education, promotion and management projects. “Music is an economic driver as well as a balm for the soul,” says Culture Minister Ron Orr. “The live music industry is an important part of Alberta’s economic recovery and rebuilding community spirit after trying times. We need to protect and support musicians, producers, managers, promoters, and other live music industry professionals in Alberta, because there wouldn’t be an industry without them.” An independent panel is evaluating applications based on artistic merit, project scope, benefit to the community and creativity, with the successful project being fund to possibly promote a socially distanced event, or to livestream a concert, or new equipment. Content creation, business expenses, professional development and professional artist fees are also eligible for funding. Due to high demand, the second grant stream, the Music Business Innovation grant is now closed. That grant aimed to assist for-profit venues and other music industry businesses get back to staging live concerts.
