Medicine Hat’s active COVID case number is quickly moving upwards and is well ahead of most other major municipalities in the province, according to figures released Wednesday afternoon.

The Hat added 15 new diagnoses from the previous day, bringing the total to 45 active cases, according to Alberta government’s statistical website, more than double the 18 in the city on Thursday, July 22.

That current total is more active cases than those in Lethbridge (19), Red Deer (15), Okotoks (23), Grande Prairie (18), Airdrie (32), St. Albert (10) all of which have similar or larger populations.

In the southeast, Cypress County added five cases to bring the new total to eight, and Brooks’ case count rose by five and now sits at 29.

The News incorrectly stated in Wednesday’s edition that there were 44 active cases in Medicine Hat as of July 27. That was, in fact, the number of cases per 100,000 residents (a comparative figure used by statisticians).

The same figure after Wednesday’s update sees city the having 66 cases per 100,000 residents, a rate higher than Calgary, where 40% of all active cases in the province are located.
