A positive case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Medicine Hat’s summer school Program. Warren Buckler, principal of Medicine Hat Public School Division summer school, stated Alberta Health Services identified a positive case of COVID-19 connected to the school in a release that was made available to press on Monday. In the press release, Buckler states, “As a result, AHS has directed some students and staff to quarantine for a specified time period. After a thorough investigation all close contacts of the positive case have been identified and notified. We are confident, based on AHS guidance, that those who have not been directed to quarantine can go about their daily lives. Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to quarantine; however, they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.” Buckler said the individual and family will be supported and wished them a safe and speedy recovery. “We ask families and students to show compassion and kindness for those that have been impacted by a positive COVID-19 case. As always, we will work collectively to foster a safe, caring and welcoming school environment.” Buckler expressed that it might be difficult to learn of a positive COVID case in the school community but that “the health and safety of students and staff is our priority, and we are committed to working together to protect our school community, reduce exposure and limit the spread.” The press release states that the custodial service team has been directed to enhance their cleaning protocols before any students or staff come back into the building. “This additional cleaning will focus on areas where the individual was present along with high touch areas and surfaces throughout the school.” If you have any questions or concerns, contact the school at warren.buckler@sd76.ab.ca or call 403-528-6700 ext. 3150. 10
