A Lethbridge man accused of killing another man over a property dispute earlier this year is likely headed for trial.
The matter for Jade Levi Trotter was in Lethbridge provincial court Friday, where defence said it needs to arrange a pre-trial conference to discuss setting a date for a preliminary hearing. A preliminary hearing is typically held to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant a trial.
During Friday’s brief hearing, Calgary lawyer Gloria Froese told court she needs to move ahead with the preliminary hearing because resolution discussions with the Crown “have not been fruitful.”
Trotter, who remains in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre and was not required to attend court, is charged with one count each of second-degree murder and break and enter.
Police, responding to a call Feb. 8 that someone was screaming for help, arrived at an apartment building in the 1200 block of 4 Avenue South and found the body of 65-year-old Glenn Lofthouse. Police arrested Trotter the following day at a residence in the 1100 block of 11 Street South.
Police reported the suspect and victim knew each other, and the alleged murder was over a property dispute. Police also recovered a weapon they believe was used to kill Lofthouse.
The case returns to court Aug. 6, to confirm whether a pre-trial conference was held and a date was set for a preliminary hearing.
