Smoke, Wind and Fire barbecue competition set for this weekend

The grilling will be getting good this weekend.
Lethbridge will host Alberta’s first Master Series Barbecue Competition — Smoke, Wind and Fire — July 10 and 11 at Exhibition Park.
The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the world’s largest competitive barbecue organization.
The “Smoke, Wind and Fire” competition will award prizes in four traditional grilling categories —chicken, ribs, pork, and beef brisket — will be free to attend and an opportunity to learn more about grilling and barbecue skills from expert demonstrators who will also be offering samples of their charcuterie meats.
Attendees will also have the chance to enter a team into the Backyard Amateur BBQ Competition July 10. Contestants will compete in two categories — chicken and ribs — for the right to be named “Lord (or Lady) of the Grill.”
Calgary chefs John Jackson and Chef Connie DeSousa of CHARCUT will be judges at the competition.
Jackson, who does not have a driver’s license, will be cycling more than 200 kilometers from Calgary to get to the event, while DeSousa will attempt to break her record of deboning a pig’s head in under a minute July 10 at 1 p.m.
Visitors are invited to stick around after Smoke, Wind and Fire to enjoy Lethbridge’s attractions and restaurants with Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, Fort Whoop-Up, Waterton Lakes National Park, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre all close by.
