Matthew David Keeler didn’t want to pay to have one stolen vehicle repaired, so instead, he simply stole another one.
A Â stolen Chevy Silverado 2500 Keeler and a woman were driving broke down on Jan. 14 of last year in the parking lot of Picture Butte UFA. The woman approached an employee for help to repair the vehicle, which was eventually able to be driven to OK Tire in Picture Butte for repairs.
But while arrangements were being made to repair the truck, Keeler and the woman disappeared. Video surveillance captured them, however, driving off in a Ford F350 truck that had been left idling outside the tire shop.
The next day Keeler and the woman were arrested when police were called to attend to a vehicle that was stuck in a snowy ditch on Highway 810 north of Glenwood in Cardston County. That vehicle had been stolen, as well.
“All vehicles were eventually recovered,” Crown Prosecutor Dawn Janecke said Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court, where Keeler pleaded guilty to three charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
Keeler, who has a criminal record that includes previous charges for stolen property, was sentenced to four months in jail. The Crown pointed out that at the time of the offences in January 2020, Keeler was out on bail stemming from charges out of Calgary.
