A proposal to build a massive solar power facility east of Medicine Hat will go to a hearing before utility regulators this summer.

Dunmore Solar would be a 216-megawatt-capacity facility comprising most of six quarter-sections near Highway 41, between township roads 124 and 130, about two kilometres east of the junction with Highway 41A.

An official application to build the $200-million array and related substation went to the Alberta Utilities Commission in April. It would connect to an existing AltaLink distribution line in the area.

On Wednesday, the AUC issued public notice that it is accepting written submissions on proceeding No. 26485 until Aug. 11.

The project is owned by P&T Global Renewable Energy, a global investment firm that acquired the project from original proponent U.K.-based Horus Energy, of which P&T is a part-owner.

According to a project newsletter Dunmore Solar would be built starting next year and in operation by April 2023, depending on regulatory approval.

Buffalo Atlee Wind OK’d

The AUC has approved the layout and plan to build the first three phases of the Buffalo Atlee wind farm in Special Areas 2 that won supply contracts from the province in late 2018.

In late June, the commission released its decision on q Capstone Infrastructure plan to build a total of 10 turbines capable of producing 48 megawatts of power in peak conditions southeast of the hamlet of Jenner. Those phases, known as Buffalo Atlee 1, 2 and 3, are owned in partnership with the Sawridge First Nation, and are subject to a 20-year set-rate supply contract with the Alberta Electricity System operator, beginning in 2020.

A since proposed fourth phase, would not be subject to the contract.
