A Medicine Hat man faces only a single weapons charge following a high-profile incident and police negotiations near a busy south-end intersection Thursday night.

The service told the public to avoid the intersection of Dunmore Road and Ross Glen Drive at about 9 p.m. that night, and brought in the tactical team to contain the man and his vehicle in a restaurant parking lot.

The 53-year-old man who told police he had a weapon was taken into custody peacefully two hours later and was released overnight.

Medicine Hat Police Service spokesperson said they were called at about 8 p.m. to respond to a call of a man expressing mental duress. The individual fled after some interaction and his vehicle ended up stuck on an embankment at the restaurant, which is currently closed for renovations.
