City police officer charged with assault

By Medicine Hat News on June 24, 2021.

Medicine Hat Police Service has charged one of its officers with one count of assault in connection with an off-duty incident that took place April 17, MHPS announced Wednesday evening.

Cst. Myles Steiger, an 11-year veteran of MHPS, has been charged and placed on administrative duties until further notice following an altercation stemming from a youth knocking on the door to his home and running away.

The release states an MHPS investigation determined that a youth knocked on the door of the off-duty officer’s residence at around 10 p.m. on April 17 before fleeing. The officer then exited his residence and encountered another youth nearby, leading to an altercation.

Results of the MHPS investigation were forwarded to the Crown Prosecution Service for review, after which it was determined the offer be charged with assault.

The release goes on to state that “upon conclusion of the matter in court, it is anticipated that the internal disciplinary process under the Police Act will follow. The disciplinary process will determine whether any discipline, up to and including dismissal, is appropriate.

“In order to ensure appropriate oversight, the Chair of the Medicine Hat Police Commission and the provincial Director of Law Enforcement, were notified of the investigation.”

Steiger is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 4.

It’s laughable you want to through in the Liberal angle.
Did you read the part where he didn’t even assault the kid that knocked on his door?
The officer then exited his residence and encountered another youth nearby, leading to an altercation.”
