The construction season is off and running in Medicine Hat, and the clock is ticking on a number of city infrastructure projects funded by provincial and federal grants that must be completed by year end.
Construction fence is up at Athletic Park where a $3-million modernization will take place this summer.
Another major project added to the city’s capital plan was a $2-million pickleball facility at the Family Leisure Centre, which saw bidding closed April 15, though no official award has been made public yet.
Those two projects headline a substantial list of new work added by the city after it was awarded $7.5 million in provincial stimulus grants and receiving approval to move $10.9 million in long-term federal transit grants to projects this year.
Bidding closes May 11 on another high profile project to expand city-owned offices at 533 First St., into the parking lot of the former downtown Canada Post branch.
A number of the projects have been part of tendering processes this spring, though few results have moved through to the city’s administrative committee for contracts to be officially awarded.
Last week the city’s parks department announced work to extend and upgrade portions of the Heritage Trail network will be underway soon, though a new tender is out to develop a mountain bike trail.
The list also includes tree planting and water treatment upgrades at Echo Dale Regional Park, the “Town Square” redevelopment at the parking lot across from city hall, new roofs for some city facilities, and a schedule of pedestrian foot bridge repairs.
