1923 ~ ROSINA FETTIG ~ 2021

Rose (Rosina) Fettig of Medicine Hat beloved wife of the late Anton J. (Tony) Fettig passed peacefully on April 24, 2021 at the age of 97 years. Rose leaves to cherish her memory her children, Dwayne (Lynda Niemans) Fettig, Del (Suellen Hallworth) Fettig, Heather (Greg) Mezei; grandchildren, Justin Mezei, Breanne Mezei & Simon (Stacey) Fettig. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tony Fettig in 2002 and her son, Sherwin Fettig. She’s the sole survivor of her immediate family parents, John & Elizabeth Zacher; brother & sisters in-law, Milton (Eva), Joseph (Agnes), John (Phyllis), Peter (Elizabeth), George, Martin (Eleanor), and Wendell Zacher; sisters & brothers in-law, Irene (Matt) Shatz, Katie (Frank) Bernhart, Jennie (Joe) Roth, Betty (Joe) Krassman; survived by in-laws, Katherine Zacher, Helen Zacher, Elsie Fettig & Jack Fettig; as well.as numerous nieces, nephews & their families. Rose was born October 8, 1923 in Medicine Hat, raised on the farm in the Winnifred/Maleb areas. After her schooling she worked for the Murray Family and Medicine Hat Hospital Maternity Ward. Mom met the love of her life, Tony Fettig, in 1942, wed October 3, 1945 and shared a loving and steadfast marriage for 57 years. Together they developed a mixed farming operation south of Burdett. Mom had a green thumb, enjoyed her plants and flowers, keeping a large garden ensuring enough produce to preserve to carry us to the next year. There was plenty of hard work but Sundays were for attending Church, special dinners, laughter, singing, dancing and playing cards with family & friends. Our parents gifted each of us with music lessons. After evening meals Mom sat beside us listening closely as we practiced our lessons while Dad took over dish duty in the kitchen. Mom had a loving heart and we shared our home with foster children for 12 years. Rose & Tony sold the farm in 1975 retiring to Bow Island where Mom provided child care services. They enjoyed dancing with the Hat Swingers Square Dance Club, with their greatest highlight a trip to Bermuda, where they danced in the ocean. Relocating to Medicine Hat they enjoyed shuffleboard with family and friends. They loved their grandchildren dearly, spoiling them on weekly visits indulging in Dad’s homemade icecream, learning Mom’s baking skills, assembling puzzles, coloring and eating smarties. Mom and Dad were their greatest cheerleaders, attending their sporting and school events at every opportunity. After Dad’s passing Mom became a resident at Cypress View taking pride in reviving the plants in the solarium. As her health declined Rose transferred to Meadow Ridge Seniors Village, looking forward to her daughter’s visits and dancing with her at the entertainment events. They danced every dance together, otherwise, as Mom said “it was a waste of good music!” The family is grateful for the loving care she received at Meadow Ridge during the final years of her life. Mom handled the challenges of her illness with grace & dignity, had a positive outlook on life, always finding the good. She loved her family dearly and had a strong faith, remembering the words to her prayers right until her last days. She was resilient, full of energy, and is a 25+ year breast cancer survivor. One of her enlightening sayings “If you don’t like something and can’t change it, you have to accept it if you want to be happy”. She always found a way to be happy! Mom’s loving memory will live on in our hearts. Prayers will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel Friday May 7th from 7-9:00 pm. A private family celebration of Rose’s life will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 8th at 10:00 am. Family & friends are welcome to participate via livestream logging on to http://www.saamis.com joining the live broadcast on Rose’s memorial page on May 8th at 9:50 am. MARGARET ERVA SHIRKIE

1927-2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Shirkie at the Good Samaritan Home in Medicine Hat on April 28, 2021, at the age of 93 years. Margaret is lovingly remembered by her family, Alice (Jim) Hoffart, Mary (Duffy) Rebman, all of Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Andy (Debbie) Shirkie of Cabri, Saskatchewan. She was a cherished grandmother to Derek (Lisa) Hoffart of Regina, Jordan Hoffart (Miranda Lane) of Edmonton, Shawn Rebman (Adara Laycock) of Medicine Hat, Heather (Verna) Neilson of Canning, Nova Scotia, Amie Shirkie (Dean Ziegler) of Saskatoon, Camille Shirkie (Brennan Kilmister) of Saskatoon, and Janice Shirkie (Jesse Butler) of Swift Current. She delighted in her ten great-grandchildren, Elliot and Clara Hoffart, Henry and Hazel Hoffart, Adia and Arlo Neilson, Grayson Rebman, and Mila, Rowan, and Remi Kilmister. She is also survived by two sisters; Dorothy Lytle and Connie Williams; sister-in-law, Maryanne VanBuskirk; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews on both the VanBuskirk and Shirkie sides of the family. Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Harry Shirkie, in 1996. She also lost three sisters; Vera Reed, Marian Scheelhaase, and Florence Wallis; a brother, David VanBuskirk; as well as five brothers-in-law, Henry Reed, Ray Scheelhaase, Joe Wallis, Bill Lytle and Bevan Williams. Margaret was born at Tuberose, Saskatchewan to Alice and Walter VanBuskirk on June 25, 1927 and grew up as the middle child of a family of seven children on a farm near Kyle, SK. After completing her schooling in Kyle, she worked at the Royal Bank in Swift Current and later in New Westminster, B.C. She married Harry Shirkie on November 4, 1950 in Burnaby, B.C and they moved to their farm at Battrum, SK in the spring of 1951, where they continued to farm until 1983 when they moved to their new home in Pennant, SK. Margaret loved farm life and she was very active in the operation of the farm, running the combine and hauling grain. She and Harry contributed their time and talents to the communities of Battrum and Pennant, through dedicated service to the United Church, 4-H, youth groups, the Senior’s group and the Curling Club, where they were both avid curlers. Margaret loved her summers spent at the cabin at Clearwater Lake – a real gathering place for family and friends! She enjoyed travelling to Arizona, B.C., Hawaii, the Maritimes and Alaska. In 2002, Margaret moved to Medicine Hat, where she formed new friendships and again spent many hours volunteering on the Social Committee of the Park Meadows Village Condo. She greatly valued her independence and was known for her generosity, hospitality, spunky but practical approach to life and her love of family and friends. It gave her great joy to be surrounded by those she loved! As her health declined, she lived in Meadowlands Senior’s Complex and later in the Good Samaritan Society Home. Her motto was to accept the things that could not be changed, and she was always grateful for the many blessings she had received all throughout her life. The family wish to thank Dr. Jonker and the amazing care team at Good Samaritan for the wonderful compassion, care and support given to Margaret. There will be a graveside service at the Pennant Cemetery at a later date when the family will be able to gather together. WAYNE THOMAS CRAVEN

1941 – 2021

Wayne Thomas Craven slipped away quietly, gently on Friday, April 23, 2021 at age 80. He leaves behind his beloved family, wife and touch stone of 55 years Sandra (Brown), his two sons, Boyd (Sherry) and grandsons Darrian and Cooper, and Mark (Sasha) and grandchildren, Eleandra and Blake; sister-in-law Marlene Craven, cousin Nicki (Bradshaw) Hudec; in-laws Darlene and Norman Keeler, Lori and Darcy Moch; numerous nieces and nephews; many dear friends, especially Ken and Missi. He was predeceased by father Milton ‘Mickey’ Craven, mother Mary Craven-Williams, step-father Alec Williams and brother Ron.

Wayne was blessed with an abundance of gifts, gifts which he used wisely to create a rich and fulfilling life. In 1961, Wayne accepted a position as ‘nightman’ at CHAT Radio, thus beginning an eight-year association with the company. His deep rich voice, good looks and easy-going personality suited a career in broadcasting and he flourished. Time spent at CHAT Radio and TV, provided opportunities to hone skills which would serve him well in business, politics and the Arts. From 1969 to 1973, he operated P. Lawson Travel Agency. In 1974, he became a partner in Century Homes/Craven and Hall Real Estate, with brother Ron and Fred Hall.

In 1963, Wayne joined the cast of South Pacific, his first musical. This began a fifty-year commitment to community theatre using his talents to act, produce and direct more than 35 plays and musicals.

1989 saw Wayne enter the political arena. Such was the public’s on-going support, Wayne served a total of six terms, each time leading the polls.

His sense of community stemmed from his formative years living on the Flats. “People sat on their porches, you could smell the cooking, hear and see kids playing. You knew your neighbors.” He spoke with such pride and respect.

Away from the lime light, however, Wayne the husband, the parent was a quiet, introspective individual. Relaxing to jazz, puttering around the yard, enjoying the ‘noises’ of grandchildren and family gatherings grounded him.

Cancer took his life, but not his soul or our memories.
