Community Foundation to offer safe space grants

LETHBRIDGE HERALDtkalinowski@lethbridgeherald.com The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwest Alberta will be offering Emerald Anniversary safe space grants which will help communities and organizations prepare to gather safely once more in the near future.“It’s about coming through COVID-19 and into a healthier or safe community,” says Community Foundation executive director Charleen Davidson, “but we still want to focus on the ‘safe.’ So maybe you are looking at doing sinks where you can just wave your hand under (a sensor) instead of using taps. Or maybe you have some trails and you want to do some paving or some benches around it, or something like that.”
There will be 10 grants offered each totalling $5,500 to provide safe spaces for community gatherings. The limited number of grants means it’s important for organizations to work cooperatively to create proposals which will maximize how the dollars are used in each community, says Davidson.
“We are encouraging communities to collaborate because there is only going to be 10 grants at $5,500,” she explains. “It is the first time we have offered this type of a grant, and so it is not really locked into it has to be A, B or C. Let us know what you are doing in your community that is going to promote your community gathering safely.”
Grant applications are due by May 17.
