A Lethbridge man accused of making bombs in his residence was back in custody after failing to comply with conditions of his release.
Shaun Ryan Hlavach, who was released on bail last October, had been ordered as part of his bail conditions to report to the Lethbridge Police Service once a week. He failed to report on Dec. 11, however, which resulted in the first breach.
He was also bound by a 24-hour curfew, but at about 7 p.m. March 22 police saw him driving a vehicle and park at a grocery store. Police knew he was subject to a curfew, and he was arrested.
Hlavach pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to the two breach charges, and was sentenced to seven days in jail. He was given credit for six days spent in pre-trial custody, and was expected to be released after serving the one day remaining on his sentence.
Hlavach is scheduled to return to court April 22 on more than 30 criminal charges stemming from a police raid on a southside home Sept. 24.
Lethbridge police were looking for drugs when they searched a home in the 800 block of 16 Street South. The explosive disposal unit was called in, however, after police noticed several suspicious packages. The explosives unit confirmed the items were improvised bombs.
Police reportedly found seven explosive devices, along with suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine, as well as more than $13,000 in cash, stolen property and ID documents, and various items one of the suspects was prohibited from possessing.
Hlavach’s charges include multiple counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, possession of a prohibited weapon, knowingly possessing a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of an explosive substance, possession of stolen property and possession of identity documents.
Hlavach was released from custody Oct. 15 on a $1,500 bail with conditions that he also abstain from the use and possession of drugs, not possess any weapons, surrender any weapons he may have, and reside in an approved residence.
