Artists in southeastern Alberta are being called upon by the Travelling Exhibition Program.
The local chapter of the program is asking artists in the region to submit samples of their work online, with the potential of featuring them in future travelling exhibits.
“The Travelling Exhibition has been around for 40 years and it is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year,” said travelling exhibition curator Genevieve Farrell. “The program is dedicated to exhibiting Alberta artists, and making sure that people living outside major city centres can access art. This is also great for people who may not go to traditional art galleries.
“We think it’s really important for Albertans to connect with the work of artists from this province.”
There are four regional managers for TREX, with Farrell managing the southeast. She says a map has been released to show what communities can submit art in our region.
“Medicine Hat and Lethbridge would obviously be the biggest in our region,” she said. “The goal is to touch base and make contact with people in those cities, but also in small centres that may not think to contact us.
“We want to get to know these artists and these communities, and then we can possibly feature them in future travelling exhibits around Alberta.”
Each exhibition travels for up to two and a half years. They travel locally and in other areas of the province.
Due to the program being travel-based, artists must keep in mind that there are size and weight constraints.
“Everything has to be loaded into a crate, then it’s unloaded by people who are not usually professionals,” said Farrell. “Things can’t be extremely large or heavy. These are featured in libraries, schools, community centres, places like that.
