A 29-year-old man is in custody after the Lethbridge police station was forced to close Thursday morning as police dealt with a suspicious package left in the building.
Police say around 10:15 a.m. they were alerted to a man who was said to have thrown a package into the front vestibule of the police station before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.
Police say a suspect was apprehended a short time later.
Officers were seen posted in front of the property as the explosive disposal unit deployed a mobile remote controlled unit into the main entryway. A cardboard box, covered in what appeared to be messages written in black marker, was carried outside and dismantled by the remote unit.
Once the package was determined not to be an explosive the Lethbridge fire department’s hazardous material unit was able to verify the package contained no hazardous materials.
Police staff was allowed back into the closed portion of the police station and around 1:30 p.m. public entry was once again permitted to the building.
Police say that no further details are being released at this time as the matter still under investigation.
