Locally raised artist chosen for Royal Academy exhibition

By Medicine Hat News on October 3, 2020.

Work by a Medicine Hat-raised artist has been selected for the prestigious Royal Academy of Art’s Summer Exhibition in London, U.K.

Chris Bennett was born in England, then raised in the Hat, attending Medicine Hat High School and graduating from the Alberta College of Art and Design before moving to London to work in 2004.

The 252nd annual summer exhibition was delayed this year by the COVID-19 pandemic, but opens to the public on Oct. 6 and runs until Jan. 3. A preview begins today.

The show has run continuously since 1768 and typically garners more than 14,000 submissions before a selection committee chooses pieces for display.

Options for remote viewing are not immediately clear.

Bennett is represented in Canada by the Paul Kuhn Gallery in Calgary, and still has relations living in Medicine Hat.
