Kristen Norris defended her crown for a third consecutive Medicine Hat Open women’s singles championship this weekend. Norris held on for the title in a gruelling final with Dannan McElroy-O’Driscoll on Saturday at Medicine Hat Tennis Club. After taking the first set 6-4, Norris fell by the same margin in the second before rallying to a 7-5 victory in the third. Calvin Heller defeated Craig Weich to claim the men’s singles championship a year after falling to Raymond Weich in the final. Heller picked up this year’s victory in two sets, 6-2 and 6-0. David Schnare took the men’s intermediate singles crown by defeating Mike Dykstra 6-4, 6-4 in the final. All three finals resulted in the top seed defeating the second seed for the title. Tracy Heller won the women’s consolation bracket with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sheila Reinheller. Nick Douvis came back to defeat Jess Ferris 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to win the men’s consolation final. The Medicine Hat Open doubles tournament began Monday afternoon. Championship play in the tournament is scheduled for Saturday. 9
