Redcliff RCMP have charged former Alberta Liberal candidate and Walsh Save On Gas owner Anwar Kamaran with one count of assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm following a series of altercations in Walsh over the weekend.
Redcliff RCMP Staff Sgt. Sean Maxwell says Kamaran allegedly assaulted a female in Walsh on Aug. 8 and was apprehended the following day. Kamaran was released Aug. 9 then allegedly assaulted two men in Walsh later that same day, causing bodily harm in both instances.
“He was arrested and released on (Aug. 9) and then breached those conditions when the other assaults happened,” said Maxwell, adding the first assault did not result in bodily harm. “The assaults causing bodily harm required medical attention and then both individuals have been released.”
Maxwell could not go into detail regarding the nature of the assaults or the specific locations where they took place. The RCMP will not be releasing the names of the victims.
Kamaran is also facing three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking condition.
Kamaran was held in custody from Aug. 9 to Aug. 12, at which time he appeared at Medicine Hat Provincial Court and was released on several conditions. Those conditions include no contact with the victims and not to attend the Village of Walsh except under court-ordered circumstances. Maxwell could not provide further information on how these conditions will be enforced, given that Kamaran owns a business in Walsh.
Kamaran ran for MLA of Cypress-Medicine Hat under the Alberta Liberal banner in 2019.
The next court appearance in this matter is scheduled for Sept. 16 in Medicine Hat.
