Now you see it, now you won’t – a contraption attached to a light standard at the bottom of Scholten Hill.

A camera is part of the equipment on that light standard and has been put in place by the city, says a spokesperson. It is recording traffic volume and what type of traffic that is, including whether they are cars, heavy trucks, pedestrians or cyclists.

“The information is uploaded and the software provides a data breakdown,” the city spokesperson said.

At the bottom of Scholten Hill the city is also looking for information on the trail that crosses the road at that point. This is the Saratoga Park Trail that runs alongside Seven Persons Creek. Although the trail actually goes under the road, many people are choosing to cross the road at street level and then continue on the trail toward Medalta in the Historic Clay District, and eventually into Strathcona Island Park.

The city is interested in knowing how many people and cyclists are crossing the road rather than going under.

“Usage is being assessed by Municipal Works to determine what type of crossing aid might be warranted based on demand,” said the spokesperson.
