Despite a scare from heavy rain early Friday, the annual Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres book sale was able to kick off before the weekend hit.
The outdoor sale is taking place downtown at the Rite Downtown Garden Centre near the Monarch on Second Street. It will be running today and Sunday from 10-6 p.m.
“The rain caused a bit of stress, but it ended up being a really nice day,” said book sale organizer Sam Sandidge. “We had to start a bit late today, but we worked quickly to open as soon as we could.
“We’re hoping this will be a great weekend.”
The sale has books priced between 25 cents and $2, with prices going to 50 per cent off on Saturday. Sunday, people are able to fill a bag for $10.
“All of the proceeds from this sale will be going to APARC,” said Sandidge. “Because of COVID-19, fundraising is down at the shelter and the money is needed right now.
“People can be sure this money will be going to help animals in the area.”
A lot of the books for sale this weekend are back stock from the Page and Whisker, and are spread out around the garden centre to allow people to physically distance.
“Some of the books just don’t sell at the store due to quality or age, so they get thrown into sales like this for a heavy discount,” said Sandidge.
With kitten season in full swing, Sandidge says APARC needs the money and appreciates the support.
“Vet bills and supplies for the animals are a big need right now,” he said. “Things like vaccinations and de-worming are necessary and expensive.”
The sale has books of all kind of various genres, and paperback and hardcover selections.
Pets are allowed at the sale.
