Solar project set to break ground will produce up to 39 megawatts

By Medicine Hat News on August 1, 2020.

A new utility-scale solar project will begin construction southwest of Medicine Hat this month, according to a release from BluEarth Renewables.

BluEarth announced it has signed a power purchase agreement with Bullfrog Power to “directly support the construction” of the 39-megawatt Burdett and Yellow Lake Solar Project, which could commence commercial operations as early as April of next year.

“Bullfrog and (Royal Bank of Canada) will purchase the majority of the project’s environmental attributes,” reads the release. “The advancement of this project demonstrates that renewable energy can be cost-competitive in an open market and that PPAs can facilitate green investment in the Alberta economy.”

The release goes on to claim that the project will create more than 300 jobs during construction, while injecting more than $70 million of capital investment into the provincial economy and producing enough renewable energy to power around 6,400 homes annually.

“Power purchase agreements like the ones Bullfrog Power and RBC have signed with BluEarth are the most effective way to expand renewable energy in Canada,” Bullfrog Power president Sean Drygas says in the release. “We’re excited to secure a predictable, economic supply of renewable energy attributes from the Burdett and Yellow Lake Solar Project.”
