A legacy oil patch construction company has apparently shut down its yard in Medicine Hat.

The Brier Park location of Mastec Canada – once Big Country Energy Services – has been stripped of most signs and the yard that once housed side booms, skids and other pipeline equipment is empty.

Big Country was founded in Medicine Hat in 2000 and expanded to locations across Western Canada and the United States before it was acquired in in 2013 by Mastec, a large Florida-based civil and energy infrastructure construction firm.

Following a further purchase of Alberta-based Pacer Construction the Canadian unit was rebranded as Mastec Canada in 2017.

The Medicine Hat property was one of four locations sold by Mastec to industrial real estate firm Nexus REIT in 2019.

At the time of the sale, Nexus stated that an apparent lease-back program involved terms ranging between four to seven years at locations in the Hat, Fort. St. John, B.C., Blackfalds, Alta., and Estevan, Sask.

Medicine Hat has been removed from the Mastec Canada website directory. Calls by the News for comment to the company’s head office in Calgary were not returned.
