1930 ~ JOAN RICHARD ~ 2020

Mrs. Joan Richard (nee Britt) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years at River Ridge Extended Care Home on Sunday, June 28th, 2020. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Edgar. She is survived by her sister Madelaine (Peter) and family as well as her own children, grandchildren, and great grandson: Randy (Tammy) – Jessica (Byron) & Travis; Mark (Sandra) – Tyler (Shantel – Carter) & Brittany (Kyle); Mary (Ron); Jon (Barb). Mom was born and raised in Redcliff and chose to pursue a career in nursing, graduating in 1953 from the Medicine Hat General Hospital’s School of Nursing. She ministered as a registered nurse for over 40 years. Her career took her through a number of positions in pediatrics, geriatrics and Director of Nursing for the Auxiliary Hospital. Mom loved her patients and early in her career would even take some of the children home for the weekend or for meals since they were often left at the hospital alone. She extended this love to her family and friends and loved to entertain. Mom welcomed everyone into her home and hosted Sunday suppers for the family every week. The small house was filled with wonderful smells, laughter, and cherished memories to last a lifetime. She also enjoyed camping with her children and grandchildren and could be found doing crossword puzzles, word searches, playing solitaire, and watching her birds at the feeders through her back window. Mom and Dad were both avid lifetime Medicine Hat Tigers season ticket holders and could be found cheering on the boys (but not the refs!) Mom’s other longtime dedication was to her faith. She received her 60 year pin this year from the CWL – Catholic Women’s League and was an active member of both St. Mary’s and Holy Family Parish. Gathering up her belongings we also found her prayer book where she had listed all of the people she prayed for each day. When Mom was your friend, she was a friend for life. Mom/Grandma has etched on our hearts so many wonderful memories and we will miss her warm smile and love. The family is deeply grateful to the loving and caring staff at River Ridge who extended Joan the greatest of dignity. Due to the restrictions on gathering, a small family and close friend’s funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 7th at 1:00 p.m. at HOLY FAMILY PARISH. Interment will follow at SAAMIS PRAIRIE VIEW CEMETERY. Friends and colleagues will be invited to celebrate Joan’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, c/o Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 4V3. ANN M. SCHELL

July 9, 1949 ~ June 26, 2020

It is with heavy sorrow that our family announces the passing of a very special lady who held our family together – Ann Margaret Schell. She was the bravest and strongest woman we have ever known. Loving and caring is an understatement for this woman. Her love knew no bounds and went uncontested by her actions her whole life. Ann was an amazing protector of her children and grandchildren, no matter the circumstances. She loved hosting every get together and holiday no matter how big or small; she welcomed everyone into her home with love. Ann was born in Grande Prairie, attended school in Camrose and resided in Medicine Hat until her passing. She was a loving housewife, mother and a secretary in the family business. Ann’s caring nature was evident by the raising of her 10 children. She had a great disposition and was always smiling and laughing. In Ann’s spare time, she loved to go bowling and fishing and won many trophies and awards at both. Some of her most treasured time was spent with her children and grandchildren often camping which included a lot of outdoor activities to keep everyone busy. Her flower beds and gardens were filled with a bounty of beauty and produce for the family to enjoy. In days gone by, Ann particularily loved to talk with her mom everyday on the telephone. She will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of her children; Kevin (Mary), Darren (Brent), Vance, Vannetta (Ernie), Vanessa; grandchildren; Tennile, T.J. (Dee), Tanner and Brody; great-grandchildren, Klynton, Kashtyn, Keiryn, Miranda, Coletin, K’Senya, Cohen and Justice; siblings, Marion (Bob), Danny (Leona) and Roger (Barb) as well as all the other family that she loved unconditionally. Ann was predeceased by the only man she truly loved and was completely devoted to, Vern M. Schell – they are together again; her mother and father; daughters; brother and many loved family members. A time of visitation will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Ann’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, on Thursday, July 9, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
