1925 ~ JOHN A. (JACK) McDOUGALD ~2020
John A. (Jack) McDougald passed away at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on May 31, 2020 at the age of 94 years. Jack was born in Maple Creek to James and Florence (Cumberland) McDougald and was raised there, along with his two younger brothers, while also spending time on the Y Bar ranch south of Maple Creek.
In 1939, at the age of 13, Jack joined the Reserve Army. That year, his unit, the 14th Canadian Light Horse, was the last unit to take horses to camp at Dundurn. In 1943 he enlisted in the Canadian Army, taking basic training at Saskatoon, Kingston, and Hamilton. World War II ended just as his unit was completing their training, so his hope to go overseas did not come to be. He remained in contact with unit comrades ever since. He was forever proud to be a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, as it was the Legion that ensured that the young soldier would complete his Grade 12 at Regina, and helped former soldiers get into agriculture.
After finishing with the army and high school, Jack returned to Maple Creek and began ranching. He was always open to innovative ideas regarding range management and cattle breeding.
Jack believed in a strong community through active participation. He served in various capacities with the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Society for Range Management, Rural Municipality of Maple Creek, Cypress Lodge Special Care Home, Maple Creek Union Hospital, Saint Mary’s Anglican Church, Southwest Saskatchewan Oldtimers’ Association, International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Royal Canadian Legion. For a number of years, he was a volunteer driver for the Handi Bus, Seniors Taxi, and Meals on Wheels.
Dad was forever welcoming, always meeting new people in Maple Creek and while travelling, and he loved learning and sharing. We know that Dad had a network of friends, young and old, far and wide, greater than we will ever know. The telephone kept him in touch with friends and relatives constantly. In 1954 he married Ivy Park. They ranched at the Y Bar until retiring to Maple Creek in 1987. They were active in the community. Dad rode his bike about Maple Creek for many years, and forever made a point of having a daily walk. He was a regular at the curling rink for many years. They did a good bit of travelling until Ivy passed away in 2003. Jack continued to do some traveling and spent several winters in Victoria. Music was important and there was a great variety via radio, home stereo, dances, theatre, festivals, music clubs and cafes, and internet radio.
Jack is survived by sons, John (Renata), Angus (Darlene), Ray (Noelene); daughter, Claire (Doug Wilson); grandchildren, Jolene (Mike), Cory (Nicole), Angela, Alexandra (Shawn), Jim (Louise), and Shaun; and numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law, Evelyn Park and Jean McDougald.
Jack was predeceased by his wife Ivy; brothers, Dan and Alex; sister-in-law, Jackie McDougald; brother-in-law, Cecil Park; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Bernice & Clinton McPhee and Margaret & Bill Herbert.
Due to COVID-19, a private graveside service was held June 4, 2020, with the Archdeacon Peter Boote officiating. A memorial service will be held in the future as covid-19 restrictions allow. Expressions of sympathy can be e-mailed to

1933 ~ JEANNINE WAGNER ~ 2020
Jeannine Aline Wagner passed away on June 9th, 2020 at the age of 87 years. Jeannine is survived by and will be missed by her sons, Clint and Clay; daughter-in-law, Christie; granddaughters, Kiaya and Piper; great grandsons, Sebastian and Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Jacqueline (Jim); brother, John (Lynn); sister-in-law, Addie; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Doug’s close cousins, Keith (Mary) and Iva Jean. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Aline; brother, David (Elizabeth); sister, Marie (Lynn); brother-in-law, Dale (Evelyn); sister-in-law, Mary and brothers-in-law, Dominick, Junior; and sisters-in-law, Tot and Norma; and brother-in-law, Stan. Jeannine was born in Sintaluta, SK to Arthur and Aline Railton. She was the third child, a sister for Marie and David. Her sister Jacqueline arrived almost three years later. Jeannine got a sister and best friend all in one. The family was completed in June of 1945 with the addition of her brother, John. When Jeannine turned six years old she went to live with her favorite aunt, Marie, and developed a driving interest to follow her into the teaching profession. She successfully completed her education at Teachers College in Moose Jaw, SK. She then taught for 34 years. Jeannine taught for three years around Sintaluta, SK, during which time an aunt started trying to be a matchmaker and pushing a gentleman as old as her father. Jeannine being the strong-willed woman that she was, went to the Superintendent and asked him to find her a new job as far away as he could. He recommended Consul, S, as he had worked down there and had a very high opinion of the town. He sent a recommendation to the school board and she was hired. She got a taste of southwest hospitality almost immediately, she arrived on the train at Shaunavon and was told she would have to wait for the train the next morning, but then the station agent said he knew a young man that was working in Consul. He contacted him and assured her that it would be more comfortable if she caught a ride with him. When they got to Consul, the young man contacted the head of the school board who directed her to Gramma Frame. Jeannine was always grateful for the ride and to be boarded with such an outstanding lady. Unknown to her, two local men, who were cousins, flipped a coin to see which one had to ask her to the dance, Doug won the toss so Harry had to ask her out. Gramma Frame assured her that they were good boys and came from good families, so she went with Harry. By the second dance it was Doug picking her up and less than a year later they were married. The first 3 years they moved several times. After the birth of their first child, Clint in December, 1959 they bought a farm at Senate. Jeannine again started teaching at Consul. She taught there for the next 30 years. In November 1962, the family was completed with the addition of Clay. There were two families in Jeannine’s life, the four of us and hundreds of students who passed through her classroom. Jeannine and Doug travelled extensively including trips to Mexico, Canadian barn dance, England and several tours with Warlin tours. After Doug had had a heart attack they moved to Medicine Hat in 1998. They bought a house on 13th Avenue, and made it their home until their passing. In honour of Jeannine’s memory donations may be made to Alzheimer Society, 201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6. The celebration of Jeannine’s life will be held at a later date due to Covid restrictions. Condolences may be sent to

GARLAND BOOKER
1947 ~ 2020
Garland Booker, beloved husband of Janis Booker of Redcliff, peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home while in the presence of family on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at the age of 72 years. Garland was born on August 10, 1947 in Roblin, Manitoba. This is where he attended school and spent his younger years. As a young boy age 7, tradgedy struck when his father passed away and he was faced with living life without a father at such an impressionable age. As a young man he worked with his uncle logging in the bush and later made his way to Esterhazy where he worked in the mine. Garland married Janis Funk on December 7, 1968 and their marriage was blessed with two children, Tracy and Donald. He trained as a heavy duty mechanic in Brandon, Manitoba and later moved to Calgary where he worked in construction. Garland had ambitions and so in 1974, he moved his family to Redcliff and was one of the original partners in El-San Industries. The hard work and dedication of Garland and his partners made the company a great success. Garland enjoyed making wine, cooking, golfing and the likes of the outdoors hunting and fishing. He also liked to relax and read books and then share his knowledge with anyone who would listen. He had many “Garlandisms” that made him the character that he was. He was very social and would say, “There are no strangers, just friends I haven’t met yet.” He was well liked and well respected. Garland was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6 in Redcliff for over 40 years. He loved to travel the world and visited destinations that included Europe, China as well as many cruises. Family meant the world to him and above all, time spent with family was most important to him. Garland will be deeply missed by his wife Janis; children, Tracy (Steve) Forbes and their children, Brianna, Grant and Cassandra; Donald (Daria) Booker and their children, Ryan and James; a brother, Kelly (Denise) Booker; sisters, Lori (Darwin) Dirk and Lana Lietz (Dave) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Booker; his mother, Rita Booker (Lietz) and his father figure, Buck Lietz; a sister, Pam Ferris and a brother, Harvey Booker. By invitation, A Celebration of Garland’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street SW, Medicine Hat on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
