A sooner-than-expected lifting of pandemic restrictions won’t change the Medicine Hat Public Library’s plan to reopen to the public on July 6. Libraries were included in an accelerated relaunch phase outlined by the provincial government this week to begin on Friday. But local library officials say that efforts to install safety provisions, recall staff and complete planned non-COVID-related construction, means they can’t open safely for several more weeks. Chief librarian Ken Feser said the staff at the facility are continuing to offer no-contact pickup service and are busy readying the library for a reopening that concentrates on safety. “We’re approaching it conservatively,” said Feser on Wednesday. “Thinking about what other libraries, and the city, is doing, and considering that we have a large electrical upgrade happening at the end of the month that will cut our power for a few days, we’ve decided to stick with the July 6 date.” When the library branch re-opens, the building will only be open from 2-6 p.m. weekdays for patrons to browse the catalogue, pick up and drop off books. Regular programming, such as story time for toddlers, presentations, or room bookings will not be available. As well, reading spaces and lounge chairs will be off limits at first. 8
