With backyard fire season here, public reminded of the rules

By Medicine Hat News on May 29, 2020.

Medicine Hat Fire Services is reminding people of the regulations for backyard fire pits.

A fire pit should not be located on or near your gas line and must be at least three metres away from any combustible structure, including buildings, fences and trees.

All backyard fire pits, portable or not, require an approved Fire Pit Permit from the City, except propane fire tables.

The online application requires a property diagram, outlining structures and the proposed location of the fire pit, as well as a gas line locate. Residents are encouraged to contact Alberta One Call to schedule an appointment.

When using your backyard fire pit, please burn respectfully and consider the speed of the wind. Give thought to letting your neighbours know in advance, as nuisance smoke can negatively affect the health of some.

Fire pits must be supervised at all times. Have water nearby to help extinguish the fire completely when you are finished.
