Clarification from MHC cuts story

By Medicine Hat News on May 22, 2020.

Unclear information was included in a report on the Medicine Hat College budget that was published int he May 21 edition of the News.

The college will continue to offering “social work” as a degree program going forward, but will no longer offer the ability for dual-accredited certificate in social work and addictions counselling.

“Addictions counselling” and three other courses of study will not accept new applicants beyond those already accepted for next fall or beyond.

The institution hopes to cut its operating costs by a total of $3.3 million next year by discontinuing the programs and laying off about 41 staff.

Certificate program for educational assistant and the bachelor degree of business administration are also being lost. Another program allows engineering students to complete course credit work locally before transferring to complete the degrees at other institutions.
