The annual Strides of Hope event for the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta takes place on Sunday – World Schizophrenia Day. The organization would like to see people wearing purple or white and perhaps make a sign to remind everyone. They would like you to take a photo and share it on social media that day. The aim is to increase awareness about schizophrenia, reduce stigma and raise funds for programs that support those living with and those who are affected by schizophrenia. One out of 100 people live with schizophrenia. In Alberta there are more than 42,000 people living with Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a treatable brain disorder that with medical treatment and support, recovery is possible. Myths and stereotypes about schizophrenia create stigma, often making it difficult for people to reach out and seek help. The organization says about 96 per cent of its clients have reported discrimination in the community as they seek employment or housing and in other aspects of daily living. The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta is a non-profit group offering support and education programs at six locations in the province. http://www.schizophrenia.ab.ca Facebook- @SchizophreniaSocietyofAlberta 10
