‘Essential service’ Farmers Market officials ironing out details for start date

By Medicine Hat News on April 23, 2020.

The opening day for the Medicine Hat Farmers Market will be delayed as organizers plan how to best operate the “essential service” as declared by the province.

The market typically opens in late May each year at the Cypress Centre on the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede grounds.

Officials say they are still in discussions with Alberta Agriculture about how to ensure physical distancing and general health orders in light of COVID-19 pandemic, and are also examining a potential change of venue.

More information will be released as it becomes available, according to a release from officials with the Stampede.

Mind your drains

Business owners and anyone with a vacant building should be filling drains to avoid sewer gas backup, the city’s environmental utilities department stated on Wednesday.

Unused sinks and floor drains that include P-traps can see water that blocks gas evaporate over time. With many businesses unoccupied as pandemic response has led to closures and lower activity, owners should be conscious to add at least a small amount of water on a weekly basis.

Sewer gas can contain hydrogen sulphide, which smells like rotten eggs, but can be odourless and harmful at high concentration. All drains should be serviced weekly.
