1160 Obituaries 1920 ~ EILEEN ANNE VAN WINKLE ~ 2020 Eileen Anne Van Winkle will be sadly missed but forever remembered by her family and friends. She passed away on March 27th, 2020 at 100 years of age. Eileen Anne Van Winkle (nee Gulak) leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters, Lois Parmar and Pamela (Wallace) Jans; three grandsons, Ben (Emerald), Graham (Michelle) and Jordan Jans; two great-grand daughters, Lily and Zoe Jans; one sister, Elaine Rewuski; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Van Winkle; her mother and father, Dmitri and Julia (Kuchrychen) Gulak; her brothers, Stephan, William (Wasyl), Carl, Walter and Orest Gulak; sister, Olga Rewuski; nephews, Brian Rewuski and Randy Gulak; and Niece, Lavina Gulak. Eileen’s unique sense of humour and her funloving ways made her many friends. Born January 7th, 1920, near Rhein, SK, she grew up working hard on the farm. She often talked about her early years and life on the farm. She met her future husband, Harry, while working at the Eatons’s Order Office in Cardston, AB. They soon moved to Medicine Hat where she spent the rest of her life. Eileen was known for her love of cooking and her wonderful meals and desserts. Every Halloween her homemade popcorn balls were a huge hit with the children in her neighbourhood. She spent endless hours working in her garden and putting up the produce. Her fridge and freezer were always full of good food that she had made. She knitted and crocheted, she sewed pretty dresses for her daughters when they were young, and later she learned quilting, making many quilts which were given to family. She also loved to read and usually had a biography in her hand. Her wish was for no formal ceremony but that her family gather together for a simple remembrance of her life. 1925 ~ WALDEMAR “WALLY” RADKE ~ 2020 Waldemar Radke of Medicine Hat, loving husband of Joyce Gehring, passed away on Tuesday, March 24th, 2020 at the age of 95 years. Wally leaves to cherish his memory daughter, Dianna (Mark) Gyorkos and children, Nathan (Ashley) Gyorkos and Kassia Gyorkos (Edwin Angarita); son, Mitch Radke and his daughter, Larissa Radke; son, Harold Radke; son, Stanley Radke Radke and children, Stacy, Paul, Teresa Vishkon and Brenda Vishkon; son, Richard (Shirley); son, Raymond Radke and his children, Stacey (Brian) McHale and Jeff Radke; son, LeRay (Cheryl) Gehring and their son, Chance; daughter, Denise Leonard and her children, Brittany (Steven) Leonard, Breanna Leonard, and Joseph Leonard; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Wally was predeceased by his father, Rudolf Radke; grandson, Dwayne Radke; brother, Ewald Radke; and daughter-in-law, Janice Radke. Wally was a very social person with a great sense of humour, and he was fortunate to make many friends in his lifetime. He enjoyed the time he spent at Dairy Queen having regular coffee visits. He was very proud of being a taxi driver for over 30 year for Deluxe Central Taxi. His interest and love for fixing things meant that he could often be found in his garage. He could fix almost anything and so he became the ultimate handyman. A private graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Due to the Covid-19 Virus, the graveside service is by invitation only. A Memorial Celebration for Waldemar will be announced at a later date. 1935 – MARVIN SAUER – 2020 Marvin Paul Sauer passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2020, at the age of 84 years, beloved husband of Delores Sauer of Medicine Hat. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Vijaya Bathineni officiating. Due to restrictions in place regarding COVID- 19 from the Chief Medical Officer of Health – funeral services are now limited to no more than 15 attendees including family. 1942 – BOB GIZEN – 2020 Robert “Bob” Joseph Gizen of Medicine Hat, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at the age of 77 years. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Bruno (Stephanie) Bernard, Roberta Gizen and Mia Gizen (Nick Martinuk); four grandchildren, Kael, Sydney, Brittany and Tyson; three sisters, Judy Lang, Kathy (Robert) Wells and Doris Young. DON PARADIS Donald Christopher Paradis, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at the age of 80 years. Left to cherish Don’s memory are his children, Patrice (Al), Denise and Les (Jamie); six grandchildren, Kaley, Tessa, Quinton, Stephanie, Brad and Sarah; brother, Ray (Millie); sister, Joyce as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sophie and their son, Randy. Don was born on September 15, 1939, in St. Paul, AB and grew up on a farm in Foisy where he attended elementary school. He finished his schooling in Edmonton and continued his education at SAIT to become an electrician; moving to several locations wherever there would be an electrical job to do. Don married Sophie on February 27, 1960, and together they raised four wonderful children. They were living in Calgary when Don’s last electrical job brought him to Medicine Hat. He moved his family to Medicine Hat in 1973 where he built their first home. When the project was completed at Alberta Gas Chemicals, Don decided to build the family another home and he decided to take up construction full time. Don started Paradon Builders where he became a well liked and respected businessman. He continued to build homes until 2006 when he retired but he wasn’t quite ready, so he built homes for a few more years. Construction was Don’s life and he enjoyed it immensely. He made many lasting relationships over the years. Don and Sophie loved travelling and going south to Arizona and the Nevada area; especially attending the PBR in Vegas and the Laughlin River Run. Don will be forever missed! The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 5E of MHRH as well as St. Joseph’s Home for their wonderful care. JOHN WARDMAN John Paul Wardman, beloved husband of the late Darlene Wardman, passed away in Medicine Hat on Friday, March 20, 2020, at the age of 84 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Vicky (Paul) Proffitt, Wendy (Albert) Bosch, Richard Wardman and Cheryl (Leroy) Yanke; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Linda Hirsekorn and Joan (David) Lawrence; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as special friends, Tom (Melanie) Chaffee. John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Darlene; parents, Tom (Emma) Wardman; sister, Lorraine (Sam) Booth; parents-in-law, Edward (Lorena) Byers and brother-in-law, Melvin Hirsekorn. John was born on January 19, 1936, in Chapple Township, Rainy Rivers District, Ontario and lived in Emo and the Fort Francis area. He married Darlene Byers in Winnipeg in 1961 and then moved to Medicine Hat. John delivered bread in Rural Ontario, was an autobody painter and a parts delivery driver. He was interested in history, loved to tell stories and was a proficient musician. John loving playing guitar and sang in numerous bands throughout the years. He was involved in the Live Music Club and his other hobbies included camping and visiting with friends and family. The service and details will be announced at a future date. LARRY KEITH NELSON November 10, 1954 – March 16, 2020 Larry Keith Nelson of High River, Alberta passed away at the High River Hospital on March 16, 2020 at the age of 65 years. He put up a brave battle against the cancer that took a kidney and eventually spread through his body over the past seven years. Larry is survived by his mother Emma (Ray) Nelson-Yanke of High River, AB; sisters Susan Nelson of Bowen Island B.C.,; brothers Rick (Debbie) Nelson of Okotoks, AB and Glen Nelson of Stettler, AB; Ray’s daughters Kim (Cam) Simpson of Medicine Hat, AB and Kari (Jim) Matsella of Medicine Hat, AB; nephews David (Cheryl) Boyce and Kurtis (Jen) Boyce as well as his nieces Kyla Nelson and Brandie (Doug) Woods and their daughter Isla. Larry was predeceased by his father Norman Nelson. Larry was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on November 10, 1954. He resided in Medicine Hat and Redcliff, AB during his school years where he made some close childhood friends and began a career in banking. Before recently retiring he had explored other work options in the petrochemical field, as a prison guard, construction from pools to bridges and golf course maintenance. He eventually worked his way west residing in numerous communities most notably Calgary, Okotoks and finally High River where he lived at his passing. Larry enjoyed sharing stories and his quirky sense of humour with family and friends, camping, fishing, hiking, movies, driving cars and motorcycles and dabbled in astrophysics. ROBERTSON Ernest William (Bill) Robertson resident of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away on March 17, 2020 at his beloved pub on Isla Mujeres in Mexico at the age of 66 years old. He was predeceased by his father John W Robertson and his mother Christel Robertson. Bill will be missed by his brothers and sister. Gordon (Claire) Robertson, Jim( Barb) Robertson and Patricia (Brad) Kyle. As well as his nieces and nephews, Raymond (Tiffany) Robertson, Sabrina Kyle, Scott Kyle and Shantel Kyle. Bill, as he was known by family and friends, was born in Finkhaus, Germany on December 7, 1953. He relocated with his parents to Calgary Alberta and was raised there attending elementary and secondary school. His interests in music and travel took him to many places in his lifetime including working with and traveling with many bands. After taking up residence in Medicine Hat, he began managing various restaurants. He later started his own restaurant and cafe at the Medicine Hat Airport for a number of years. After the airport closed to renovate, Bill decided to lease out the Whiskey Creek restaurant with his brother Gordon and sister-in law Claire. Bill enjoyed good conversations on a variety of topics with his customers, friends and family. When the lease was done, Bill decided it was time to fulfil his dream and semi-retire at his favourite pub BoBos in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. This was where he wanted to spend his senior years doing what he loved, being on the beach and at BoBos. His lifelong dream ended short when he passed away in Mexico. He will be sadly missed by his family, as well as many friends, throughout the world. Bill will be cremated in Mexico where he wanted to retire. Due to the current pandemic a celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made at the Heart & Stroke Foundation (Medicine Hat Office).
